"Every mother wants to protect her babies from suffering. This also includes animals who struggle to protect their offspring from the many threats they face. There are approximately 10,000 stray dogs in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
The life of an unneutered female dog living on the streets involves many challenges. They can't choose when they become pregnant to ensure they can provide a safe life for their baby. They desperately try and ensure their puppies are cared for but often have to witness them die or fall victim to cruelty, road traffic accidents or disease.
Without an owner they can't take their puppy to the vet when they are ill in the same way we would take our baby to a doctor. It's hard for any mother to imagine not only watching one child go through pain but to watch this happen again and again. This is all in addition to the struggles the mother faces herself just to stay alive." - Nicky Stevens, Founder of IAPWA.
ABOUT IAPWA
"IAPWA (International Aid for the Protection & Welfare of Animals) is a UK registered animal welfare charity dedicated to creating a better future for animals in need. Our work is funded entirely by the generosity of animal lovers worldwide.
Our first project is based in Kota Kinabalu, Borneo - home to approximately 10,000 stray dogs. In many countries around the world, as well as the challenges the stray dogs face every day, inhumane methods of dog population control are also practiced. In 2009 we made it our mission to change the future for dogs in this region and following four years of negotiations, we were awarded management of the city dog pound to run a humane programme to replace the previous methods. This was a huge success for the stray dogs and an important step forward to improve their lives.
In November 2015 we received fantastic news that as a result of negotiations held by IAPWA and other NGO's in Borneo, it is now prohibited for cats and dogs to be used for human consumption, animal fighting has been made illegal and there are now increased penalties for animal cruelty. This is another significant step forward and with your help we can continue to create change for the animals who have suffered for so long." -www.iapwa.org
IAPWA'S PROJECT IN KOTA KINABALU
International Aid for the Protection and Welfare of Animals (IAPWA) have set up a project in Kota Kinabalu to help these dogs. To prevent this suffering they are neutering thousands of dogs in the region to reduce the number of puppies being born.
Thousands of puppies and Mums will be spared having to endure pain and suffering through this programme and in addition to this aspect of their work they also provide much needed veterinary care to many dogs who don't have an owner to provide this and arrange homes for dogs that are unable to cope on the streets.
IAPWA are appealing for support to help their programme and would like our readers to 'like' their Facebook page www.facebook.com/iapwa. If you are able to donate towards their work please email sharilyn.marcus@iapwa.org.
